History of Debugging

December 11, 2011

I did some research today in order to fulfill my curiosity of the word Debug.

In 1947 a crew found a moth on a vacuum tube causing one of their computers to malfunction. They removed the moth and created a humorous report about how they had to literally “Debug” the system.

Although the actual origin of the terms Bug and Debug are much older and unknown, the story of the first use of the term debug in software is quite simply the moth-er of all computer puns.
